GreenFig, a market-driven education company that provides universities with turnkey, experiential learning programs in applied business science, today announced it has signed 10 campuses since last year, including: doctoral universities, nationally ranked liberal arts colleges, and regionally ranked community colleges. By regularly adapting its program offerings based on learner feedback, qualitative input from expert practitioners, and quantitative occupational data, GreenFig enables learners to gain the in-demand digital skills and professional experience industry seeks to advance, re-enter, or launch a career in 14-weeks.
“Fast-paced technology is driving tremendous career opportunity, but underemployment persists because of a gap between skills and experience for talent entering or reentering the workforce,” said Sara Leoni, CEO of GreenFig. "Together with our university partners, we provide learners with a foundation in business science, which combines hands-on technology certifications and real-world experience that puts theory into practice—a requirement for career mobility in an increasingly data-driven economy.”
The ability to create actionable insights from complex data sets is a universal need across every business industry. Almost half of U.S. employers, 46 percent, say they are unable to find the skilled people they need to compete—while a recent study by Burning Glass Technologies cites underemployment as a cycle plaguing the modern workforce. More than 10,000 specialized business applications exist today, yet 70 percent of digital initiatives will fail, primarily due to digital and experience skill gaps. Failure to achieve a desired outcome is cited as a top reason that technology providers lose customers as well.
Central to GreenFig’s pedagogy is the Apprentorship™, a mentored apprenticeship-like experience where students collaborate with skilled industry practitioners to solve real-world problems for companies. Working collaboratively in teams, students develop a portfolio of fully executed projects and gain skills using live-production instances of leading business applications to address actual business challenges. Their efforts culminate in a final project presentation where students report the thesis for their strategy, findings from their implementation, and recommendations for future iterations, to members of the companies’ management teams and other business executives.
“GreenFig shares our passion for putting students at the center of a new kind of experiential learning that has the opportunity to unlock the digital workforce at scale,” said Therese Ammiro, Assistant Dean at UC Santa Cruz Extension, Silicon Valley Campus. “With the wide adoption of Salesforce across industries, we saw an opportunity to provide students with a work-ready pathway that aligns with rapidly evolving employer demands.”
“Sponsoring the Apprentorship™ was like inviting a small agency or digital consultancy to come in, complete and present a well-executed project, while gaining incredibly valuable ideas and insights along the way,” said Johannon Olson, Co-Founder and COO of Treehut. “GreenFig’s authentic learning model is truly helping to create the next generation of digital-ready talent.”
In a mission to provide access and opportunity for all learners, GreenFig offers scholarships for working adults and professionals through partnerships with The Paradigm Switch, an organization that focuses on supporting spouses of active duty military, and Reboot Accel, which helps women return to the workforce. Additionally, GreenFig collaborates with the US Olympics and Paralympic Committee to support athletes who are ready to transition into careers. Since last year, GreenFig has awarded more than $250,000 in scholarships and is committed to matching that amount annually.
Professionals who have completed GreenFig programs are employed by a range of startups, top tech firms and Fortune 100 companies. All graduates walk away with a portfolio of their work, a certification in Applied Business Science and industry-recognized credentials, certifications or badges earned directly from companies such as: Google, Salesforce, Facebook, HubSpot, and more. Institutions also typically award students with their own high-value credentials that might include a certificate or letter of completion, continuing education units, and sometimes even academic credit.

By and large, the strategies of growing a relevant business are the same. Brand growth and awareness, market penetration, product expansion and acquisition. The marketing tactics employed to achieve those goals is what sets the front-runners apart from those playing catch-up. So how do you achieve competitive differentiation? Your people: the individuals responsible for designing and implementing those marketing tactics must rank high on your business-critical scale. Because if you don’t hire and retain top digital marketing talent, your ability to plan, execute, measure, and improve a digital campaign will be limited and impact revenue, the customer experience and brand perception. In other words, you may have the right tools, but you won’t be able to leverage their usefulness as business drivers without skilled marketers running the show. Marketing executives and industry insiders across the country are singing this tune: Better talent = Better business performance. “Talent will drive competitive advantage. Companies that invest in building digital skills in their marketing teams have a huge opportunity to accelerate ahead of their peers.” The Talent Revolution in Digital Marketing, Think with Google, 2015. What does it mean to be a skilled digital marketer in the 21st century? From a global understanding of how to align business, brand and messaging strategies to pay-per-click, SEO, and social analytics and targeting, to name a few, the breadth of skills required to be an effective digital marketer today are innumerous. Combine those skills with hands-on experience -- not just theoretical knowledge -- and the expertise to design, create, implement and analyze a digital campaign, and you’ve got a capable 21st century digital marketer. After all, the ability to harness data-driven insights is how companies gain a competitive advantage. The challenge CMOs everywhere are facing, however, is a pervasive shortage of skilled and experienced digital marketers. Companies that turn to recent college graduates are frustrated by this group’s lack of experience and outdated knowledge (not surprising, slow-to-change university curriculum can’t keep pace marketing’s fast-moving digital evolution). Meanwhile, seasoned marketers don’t possess the technical skills required to execute an effective digital campaign. “Tools and strategies that were cutting-edge just a few years ago are fast becoming obsolete, and new approaches are appearing every day.” The Ultimate Marketing Machine, Harvard Business Review. To solve the problem, marketing departments need to look inward by shoring up the expertise, technical skills and hands-on experience of their existing teams. The benefits of upskilling your staff are many, including:
When GreenFig approached me about participating as an instructor in its new Digital Marketing Science Course, I was not only honored but thrilled to have a chance to participate in a new, innovative program to build savvy digital marketers. Traditional university marketing programs set a great foundation for marketers, but their ability to stay current on the incredibly fast moving world of digital marketing falls flat. I’ve hired many marketers over the years at AT&T Mobility, Microsoft, and others, and I’ve hesitated when hiring early career graduates. The learning curve for being able to hit the ground running for digital marketing roles was just too steep when you have an already stretched marketing team. I’ve typically needed someone who could make an immediate strategic and tactical impact on my digital efforts. The GreenFig Digital Marketing Science microdegree seeks to bridge that gap for the new graduate or the professional wanting to deepen their skill set. Digital marketing is now driving most of the marketing strategies across all industries and it continues to grow. Congratulations students on taking a giant leap forward toward becoming a digital marketing professional. The course I’m teaching is called: Planning for ROI-Baseline KPIs for CMO Dashboards. In this session, we’ll have some fun addressing the following key areas:
